About M8 and M12 Connectors

M8 Connectors

An M8 connector is a circular industrial connector that is threaded, and commonly used for automation, sensing, and control applications. There is both a male and female version available, with these items being easily mated by threading the two together.

Additionally, M8 cable connectors can be used with M8 cables that correspond with the number of pins. M8 cables usually have a male M8 connector on one end and are terminated with bare wires or connectors on the other end, which gives the opportunity to establish connections for electrical conductivity. These circular connectors also come in other sizes like M5, M16, M23, and its popular rival the M12.

M12 Connectors

Similar to the M8, the M12 is another kind of circular connector that is larger in size. M12 connectors are also available in both male and female variants, with the male having threaded housing. These connectors are best suited for industrial ethernet applications, as they deliver great speed, power and reliability.

Key Differences Between M8 and M12 Circular Plastic Connectors

The M8 and M12 connectors serve similar functions in industrial applications. However, each connector comes with its own advantages.

  • Size – The first difference between the two is their size. M8 cable connectors have a smaller diameter (8 mm vs. 12 mm).
  • Pin configuration – These circular connectors also differ in their pin configuration. For example, M8 connectors typically have 3 or 4 pins while M12 connectors have 4, 5, or 8 pins because of their larger diameter. These additional pins allow for more connections, but the M8 connector has a smaller surface area which is better suited for applications where the area is more compact.
  • Application – The differences in these units’ pin configurations lead us to their application specificities. M8 cables are typically used in sensors, small actuators, and other devices that have limited space. However, M12 cables are typically used in larger applications involving machinery, automation systems, and more.
  • Codes – Common coding letters for M12 connectors include A, B, C, D, S and X codes. M8 connectors typically use A, B, C, and D. S and X codes aren’t commonly used for M8. S codes are ideal for applications such as AC motors and drives, motor load switches, and frequency converters. X codes are used for high-speed ethernet applications, delivering superior performance and bandwidth capabilities.

Our Abilities in Creating Custom Circular Connectors

At iCONN Systems, we have extensive experience in designing and engineering electronic cable connectors for varied industries. These industries typically require prototypes, quick turnaround times, and both low-volume and high-volume production, and we have the ability to meet their needs through custom circular plastic connectors.

The products we design and manufacture are in compliance with ISO and RoHS Directives, as well as customer requirements, all to give you peace of mind that every component you receive will operate to the industry standard.

If you are looking for M8, M12, or M23 custom circular connectors, iCONN Systems offers i8, i12, and i23 connectors as alternatives. We can custom engineer circular industrial connectors for almost any application or need.
